A Study of Applicability of Structural Family Therapy in Korea

Abstract
Today, through the rapid industrialization and civilization of Korean society, the Korean family structure has been shifting from extended family structure of the past to nuclear family structure. This changing trend has had great effects on family structure and health of family members in aspects of body and mind.
Family therapy has shown a rapid development in the developed countries since 1950 and there has been 5 important theories; the psychoanalytic family therapy theory of Nathan Ackerman, Bowen¢¥s family system theory, the communication theory of Satir, Minuchin¢¥s structural family therapy, and Haley¢¥s strategic family therapy theory.
This study proposes the solution of fundamental problem of family member¢¥s mental health caused by unbalance of family structure. Minuchin¢¥s theory recognized of its practical appropriateness and popular usage, was selected and applied to hospitalized mental patients to verify its applicability in Korean family structure. After the comprehensive review of Minuchin¢¥s family therapy, the case analyses approach through the Minuchin¢¥s structural family therapy is applied. The¢¥ subjects of this study consist of, randomly selected, five families of psychiatric patients in university medical center who do not have hereditary diseases.
The conclusions from this study are as follows:
First, Family and patient with motivation for therapy have shorter remedy period and few frequency of family therapy than family and patient without it.
Second, in Korean society having patriarch system, the father has more influence on children than the mother. Therefore, the more father takes up a positive attitude, the more Minuchin¢¥s theory is effective.
Third, in usual family structure, the family therapy is more effective, on the other hand, the defected family that undergo divorce or separation is less effective.
Fourth, the technique of reframing, joining, reality challenging, tasks were very effective.
Finally, in proportion to individual and sociodemographic variables, as parent¢¥s educational level, economical level, etc., the therapy effects are different.
In conclusion, this study verify that the Minuchin¢¥s family therapy model is appropriate in adapting to practically clinical cases. The further study is to develop family therapy model that is suitable to various flexible family structures.
